ABOUT ME

Hi Everyone!

My name is Yee Lian, I was born in Australia with a Cantonese cultural background. I am just an average bloke who grew up attending primary school, high school, played the occasional sport like footy, cricket, tennis and swimming, computer games and sitting for the HSC. For those who don't know what HSC stands for it is 'Higher School Certificate' which was an exam that determined Aussie student's position towards entry into University. Well, it was from this point, the HSC, that started making huge a change in my life.

While still in my teens, entering adulthood I started University, in 2013, studying Tourism Management. While studying I hung out with my mates, worked at my part-time jobs and so on. 3 years later, 2016, I complete my tourism management degree and graduate. After graduating, I decide to continue studying and pursue a Masters degree. At the time I was working as an Accounts Assistant (aka. finance clerk) so in association to my employment I thought I pursue an Accounting Masters degree, which I did for about 1 year.

Later on the year during my accounting Masters, I lost my motive and was coming to the realisation that I was not too fond of the course, asking myself why am I doing it? After, some contemplation and self-reflection I knew what I wanted to do...So I decided to drop the accounting course and transfer over to study a masters degree in Urban Management and Planning. You might be asking why the sudden shift in the course? As mentioned I did some contemplation and self-reflection, during this I asked myself what motivated me as a child and one of them was related to computer games.

Huh?! Computer games? Yes, computer games. I was particularly interested in 'Real-time strategy' games such as Sim City, The Sims, Age of Empires, and Total War franchises. These games had city building and management mechanisms which appealed to me. Because of my history with these games I decided to pursue a degree in planning and later on a career. I graduated from my Urban Management and Planning masters degree in 2019 and during my course I was working as a Strategic/Town Planner in local government.

TURNING ROADS INTO THE NEW RAIL

(Image Source: Committee for Geelong) I have noticed that there are more roads than rail in a lot of nations. Where there is rail most are built underground and out of sight from the public to ensure the peace of a setting. Same goes for roads that connect via a tunnel system. Pre-pandemic, authorities and citizens have talk about more efficient public transport and majority propose the conventional land transports such as bus, heavy rail, light rail and taxis. As I said, I noticed there are more roads than rails being built. especially in Sydney, Australia where I reside. Why not have hybrid transportation as a solution to the public transport dilemma? Unfortunately, a pandemic has hit Sydney and the globe. Now people with a private car have resorted to driving as a means to physically distant themselves from the risk of COVID infections, which is understandable. Eventually, the pandemic will pass although it would a slow transition back to use of public transport but it will happen. ...

THE CITY I WANT

Long I have resided in Sydney, being born and raised here has conditioned me to have specific expectations of what the city should be. My ideal city is a place where I should be able to walk by everyday and smile at the marvels and gifts which the city has to offer. Like every offer there will always be a trade-off. Realistically, Sydney is not perfect and there will always be some insensitivity, like the way a particular house is built, how someone drives and even the complexities of socialising. However, we can always do our best to be more courteous and empathetic, we can express judgement all we want, loudly or quietly. At the end of the day it is what gives this city its character. I want a city where the spaces are sufficient and efficient i.e. all spaces utilised and not abandoned to a mere existence. I want a city where the spaces give people opportunities to have good health and prosper together. I want a city that respects the people who make it their home, and people to resp...

HELP THE FARMERS - Connecting Schools and Farms

Watching the news tonight and there was a segment about the farmers not being able to harvest their yield. Some farmers are even willing to double their offer in paying potential employees to have their yield harvested. It is sad to hear about food not being able to be harvested because of the lack of workers. The other end some people in Australia being paid a multitude for doing nothing. It is best to encourage those who seek employment to go to those farms and work but it is difficult to get people to work particular jobs. Alternatively, a program should be organised with schools and farmers across Australia to promote seasonal excursions and have students travel to these farmers and help harvest the yields. This would be ideal to ensuring food to not be wasted and students would have an educational experience and schools can have a supply of fresh food seasonally. There are similar programs around the world. I just think especially at a time like this during a major pandemic it is ...
